Mindfulness Vs Hypervigilance
In this episode, I delve into the contrast between mindfulness and hypervigilance. For many who've endured a dysfunctional childhood, hypervigilance has been a constant companion, making the transition to a state of mindfulness challenging. This hypervigilant state, while seemingly a smart survival tactic, ultimately leads to both emotional and physical exhaustion. It's a flawed strategy for long-term wellbeing.
Highly sensitive individuals often mistakenly apply mindfulness techniques through a hypervigilant lens, which is counterproductive. Hypervigilance is laden with emotion, difficult to articulate, and keeps us perpetually on guard. On the other hand, mindfulness is about being present and embodied, releasing that constant state of alert.
I aim to clarify the distinction between mindfulness and hypervigilance. Mindfulness is a solution-focused mindset that allows us to be present, open to listening and reflecting in interactions, rather than being on the defensive. In contrast, hypervigilance is problem-focused, constantly scanning for potential threats, leading to a pessimistic view of life.
An essential part of mindfulness is understanding and accepting that we can't be vigilant enough to prevent every adverse event. This acceptance allows us to shift from a survival mode to thriving. Embracing mindfulness means letting go of the constant search for problems and instead focusing on solutions and strengths.
In this journey towards mindfulness, we also explore how to approach triggers. Leaning into triggers safely can teach us to distinguish between genuine danger and unfounded fears. This practice can retrain our bodies and minds to react differently over time, fostering a sense of safety rather than constant fear.
Moreover, mindfulness is about being present with our feelings without trying to control or avoid them. It offers a neutral, observational stance as opposed to the fear-based perspective of hypervigilance. It encourages us to engage with life from a place of internal control, focusing on what we can influence rather than external factors.
The practice of mindfulness involves embracing simplicity, connection, and responsibility for our well-being, contrasting with the defensiveness and blame often seen in hypervigilance. It's about being proactive rather than reactive, focusing on internal strength rather than external validation.
